Marmaris and Datça Peninsula
Last updated: 12 April 2026
Overview
The Marmaris and Datça Peninsula area covers a deeply indented section of Turkey's southwest coast, taking in the Gulf of Hisarönü, the Bozburun peninsula, and the long finger of the Datça peninsula extending westward to the point where the Aegean meets the Mediterranean. Beyond the main centres, the coastline gives way to forested inlets and remote anchorages.
Attractions
The area offers a mix of ancient sites and natural features.
Around the Orhaniye inlet, Ruins near Orhaniye sit above the bay on a short steep trail from the beach, with views over the sandbank and surrounding water. The Turgut Falls is a two-hour hike away through pine-forested terrain, ending at a series of freshwater pools and cascades.
Further along the gulf, Amos Antik Kenti occupies a headland above Kumlubük bay, reached by a twenty-minute walk from the anchorage. The site includes ancient walls and a partially restored amphitheatre, with open views across the bays. Entry is free.
At the tip of the Datça peninsula, Knidos ancient archaeology site occupies the point where the ancient city was positioned to command views over the harbours on both sides of the headland; the site is large and warrants several hours to explore. Bozukkale Castle stands above a remote bay at the southern tip of the Bozburun peninsula, on the site of the ancient harbour of Loryma. The largely intact walls date to around 700 BC.
Notes for mariners
The Meltemi blows from the northwest from June to September, and reaches full strength during July and August.
