Fethiye and Göcek Gulf

Last updated: 12 April 2026

Overview

The Fethiye area covers a deeply indented stretch of the Turkish Aegean coast between Marmaris to the north and the Kaş region to the east. The gulf contains a large number of bays, inlets, and offshore islands. The town of Fethiye provides a full range of provisioning and marina facilities, while the surrounding coastline is dominated by forested hillsides, Lycian rock tombs, and scattered ancient sites.

Attractions

In Fethiye town, the Ancient City of Telmessos preserves a collection of Lycian rock-cut tombs carved directly into the cliff face above the waterfront, visible from the street and accessible on foot from the town centre. The site marks the starting point of the Lycian Way long-distance trail and offers views across the bay.

The ruins at Lydae occupy a hillside above the coast and include a theatre, cisterns, and several mausoleums in varying states of preservation. The walk up from the shore takes around 40 minutes and passes through open scrub with good views along the coast.

Above Ölüdeniz, the Babadağ Chairlift ascends to around 1,900 metres in stages, with the upper sections on open chairs. The mountain is well known as a paragliding launch site, and the chairlift provides access to the summit ridge and its views over the lagoon and coast below.

St. Nicholas Island holds well-preserved Byzantine ruins including churches and a long vaulted corridor, traditionally associated with St. Nicholas. A short hike to the hilltop rewards with open sea views.

The Butterfly Valley Waterfall Trail is a short marked path leading to a waterfall at the head of a steep-sided gorge. The valley takes its name from the Jersey tiger moth and the 100-plus butterfly species recorded here, most active between June and September. A rebar ladder above the main falls gives access to a higher viewpoint.

Notes for mariners

The Fethiye gulf is generally well sheltered. Many bays in the inner gulf have laid moorings operated by shoreside restaurants; crews should confirm terms before picking up a line.
