Atlantic Coast

Last updated: 11 April 2026

Overview

Morocco's Atlantic coast runs south from Cap Spartel, at the entrance to the Strait of Gibraltar, to the border with Mauritania. The coastline is predominantly low-lying and sandy, exposed to Atlantic swell from the northwest, and offers little in the way of natural shelter. Most marinas are situated in river mouths, which can make entry weather dependent. The coast sits on the main passage route between southern Europe and the Canary Islands, and is sometimes visited by yachts leaving European waters for an Atlantic crossing.

Attractions

The Tangiers Medina, in the city centre a short walk from the waterfront, is a historic quarter of markets, cafes, and narrow streets.

Notes for mariners

Yachts are required to clear in and out at each port of call.
