West Coast

Last updated: 6 June 2026

Overview

The west coast of Italy runs the full length of the Tyrrhenian Sea, from the steep Ligurian shoreline in the north to the Strait of Messina in the south. The coastline takes in the Tuscan Archipelago, the Pontine Islands, and the Gulf of Naples, with conditions and character varying considerably between its northern and southern extremes.

Attractions

The west coast covers an extensive stretch of coastline. The attractions below represent some of the highlights you may encounter when travelling from north to south along this coast.

The five UNESCO-listed villages of Cinque Terre cling to the cliffs between Genoa and La Spezia, connected by a coastal path with views across the sea. Access by road is restricted and the train is the most practical link between villages, with services running from La Spezia.

Close by, Porto Venere sits at the southern tip of the promontory enclosing the Gulf of La Spezia. It forms part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The medieval town is compact and easily explored on foot. Attractions include the fortifications, the church of St Peter perched above the sea, and a concentration of restaurants and bars along the waterfront.

The Cabinovia Monte Capanne carries visitors from the village of Marciana up to the summit of Monte Capanne in two-person open basket cars, with views on clear days extending across the Tuscan Archipelago to Corsica. Marked trails from Marciana offer an alternative for those who prefer to walk up and take the lift down.

The hilltop village of Giglio Castello crowns the island of Giglio, enclosed within 12th-century walls. Narrow lanes wind between stone buildings, and the views from the walls extend across the island and surrounding sea. The village is reachable on foot from the port or by bus.

Close to Rome, Ostia Antica is the archaeological site of ancient Rome's principal harbour city. The ruins are extensive and well-preserved, with mosaics, warehouses, temples, and a theatre surviving largely intact.

On the island of Ponza, Grotte di Pilato are a series of caves and tunnels carved into the cliffs in Roman times, reachable by dinghy from the nearest anchorage. The tunnels extend inland from the sea and can be explored on foot.

Notes for mariners

The Strait of Messina contains a Traffic Separation Scheme. Pleasure yachts are exempt from mandatory reporting but should monitor Messina VTS on VHF channels 10 and 16 during transit. Strong tidal streams reverse roughly every six hours and affect passage planning.

Several islands within the Tuscan Archipelago National Park carry significant navigation and anchoring restrictions. Check with local authorities for current rules.
