East Coast

Last updated: 6 June 2026

Overview

Italy's east coast runs the full length of the Adriatic from the Gulf of Trieste to the heel of Puglia at Capo d'Otranto, a distance of around 650NM. The coast is low-lying and shallow in the north, with lagoons and river deltas giving way to the rockier Gargano peninsula and the more widely spaced ports of the south.

Attractions

Italy's Adriatic coast has an exceptional concentration of UNESCO World Heritage sites, from the Byzantine mosaics of Ravenna and the lagoon city of Venice in the north to the trulli settlements and ancient cave cities of Puglia in the south. In Venice, Piazza San Marco is the centrepiece of a city built entirely on water, framed by the domed Basilica and the campanile that has served as a landmark for seafarers approaching from the Adriatic for centuries.

Matera, inland from the Gulf of Taranto, is built into a limestone ravine whose cave dwellings, known as sassi, were inhabited from prehistoric times and are now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Itria Valley town of Alberobello is known for its concentration of trulli, traditional dry-stone dwellings with conical roofs that form a UNESCO-listed townscape found nowhere else in Italy.

On the waterfront at Brindisi, the Monumento Nazionale al Marinaio d'Italia is built in the form of a ship's rudder and commemorates Italian sailors lost at sea.

Notes for mariners

Summer winds on the Italian Adriatic follow a reliable pattern, with the Maestrale building from the northwest through the day and easing in the evening, replaced overnight by the Burin. The Scirocco, a warm southerly wind originating over North Africa, can build over 24 to 48 hours to gale force and is most common from spring through early autumn.

Nets and other fishing devices are widespread along the northern coast and require particular attention at night.
