Northern Croatia

Last updated: 4 April 2026

Overview

Northern Croatia covers the Istrian peninsula and the Kvarner Gulf, the northernmost cruising waters on the Croatian Adriatic. Istria's west coast is characterised by a succession of historic coastal towns with strong Venetian influence, while the interior rises to forested hills and hilltop villages. The Kvarner Gulf opens to the east of the peninsula, enclosed by the islands of Krk, Cres, Lošinj, and Rab, with the mainland Velebit range forming a dramatic backdrop to the east. The area sees less charter traffic than the waters further south and retains a more local character through much of the season.

Attractions

Pula, at the southern tip of the Istrian peninsula, is home to Pula Arena, one of the largest and best-preserved Roman amphitheatres in the world. Built in the 1st century AD, it remains largely intact and continues to be used for concerts and events during the summer months.

Also in Pula, the Gallerion War Museum is a privately run collection focused on naval warfare in the waters around Istria, covering the First and Second World Wars with artefacts, uniforms, ship models, and historical detail relating to the area's sea battles.

The old town of Rovinj occupies a compact peninsula on the west coast of Istria, its tightly packed Venetian-era streets rising steeply to the hilltop Church of St. Euphemia. The waterfront and the lanes behind it reward an afternoon on foot.

In Poreč, the Roman Mosaics are preserved in the open air within the town centre, the remains of a Roman residential complex whose floors have survived in good condition and are freely accessible.

Notes for mariners

The Bora, a powerful northeast wind, can reach considerable strength in the Kvarner Gulf and around the northern islands.

Free anchoring within Brijuni National Park is not permitted.
