Dubrovnik
Last updated: 4 April 2026
Overview
Dubrovnik lies at the southern end of Croatia, around 30 nautical miles from the border with Montenegro. It is the dominant tourist destination in the area, drawing a large volume of visitors by sea and land throughout the summer season, with quieter island stops and less frequented anchorages within easy reach. The Elaphiti Islands, a short sail to the northwest, offer a quieter alternative to the city and a natural stepping stone towards the Pelješac peninsula and the waters further north.
Attractions
Dubrovnik Old Town is one of the best-preserved medieval fortified cities in the Mediterranean and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city walls, running nearly two kilometres around the old town, can be walked in their entirety and offer views over the rooftops and out to the Adriatic.
On the Pelješac peninsula, the Walls of Ston form one of the longest fortification systems in Europe, linking the towns of Ston and Mali Ston across the hillside. The walls were built in the 14th century by the Republic of Ragusa, the predecessor state to modern Dubrovnik, following its acquisition of Ston to protect the strategically important salt pans.
On Lopud in the Elaphiti Islands, the Monastery of Our Lady of the Cave is a restored Franciscan monastery with an impressive cloister, gardens, castle views, and a small museum. Also on Lopud, the Djordjic Mayneri Park is a former botanical garden with shaded walkways, ruins of a house, and old statues set among mature planting. Entrance is free.
The trail to Vela Spila cave offers a well-maintained walk with views over Vela Luka harbour, with information boards on local flora along the route.
Notes for mariners
Dubrovnik attracts heavy cruise ship and ferry traffic throughout the summer, and the approaches to the city require care when large vessels are manoeuvring.
