The Saronic Gulf
Last updated: 7 April 2026
Overview
The Saronic Gulf is the most accessible cruising ground from Athens and commonly forms part of longer passages by yachts using the Corinth Canal to transit between the Ionian and Aegean seas. The gulf stretches from the mainland coastline around Athens in the north to the Saronic Islands and the northern extremes of the Peloponnese in the south. Boats approaching from the east pass Cape Sounion, where the Temple of Poseidon stands on the headland above the sea, a landmark visible from well offshore that has oriented sailors approaching Athens for centuries.
Attractions
The Saronic Gulf offers a concentration of ancient sites, natural features, and island character.
On Aegina, the Temple of Aphaia is among the best-preserved ancient temples in Greece. The small island of Moni, just off Aegina's southern tip, has a swim-in snorkelling spot at Moni Island Cave, with white marble-like rock and vivid blue water. On the Methana peninsula, Kameno Volcano makes for a good excursion with views from the summit.
Some of the most significant ancient sites in the region lie along the southern shore of the gulf. The Theatre of Epidaurus is the best-preserved ancient Greek theatre in existence, with remarkable acoustics, and sits within a larger sanctuary complex with extensive ruins and a small museum. Nearby, the Sunken city of Epidavros lies in one to two metres of water and can be explored by snorkel. At Nafplio, Bourtzi Castle, a Venetian fort built in 1427, sits on a small islet at the harbour entrance reachable by dinghy. Further south, Francthi Cave is one of the most thoroughly studied prehistoric sites in southeastern Europe, occupied from the Upper Palaeolithic through to around 3,000 BC, with a boardwalked main chamber leading into a deeper cave system that includes a brackish lake.
Hydra and Spetses are both car-free, with movement ashore limited to foot, donkey, and small boat. On Spetses, Bekiri's Cave lies in the corner of the bay at Agioi Anargyri on the island's western shore, reachable by swimming in from the sea or via steps from the land.
Notes for mariners
This area sees a high volume of ferry and commercial traffic and warrants vigilance.
