Golfe du Lion
Last updated: 5 April 2026
Overview
The Golfe du Lion is a wide, open stretch of coast with a flat, low-lying shoreline of long sandy beaches, shallow lagoons, and working fishing and commercial ports. The Rhône delta at the eastern end of the gulf marks the entry point to the French inland waterway network.
Attractions
At the southwestern end of the gulf, close to the Spanish border, Collioure is a particularly attractive stop on this coast. Its medieval castle dominates the harbour front, and the church of Notre-Dame-des-Anges, whose belltower served as the town lighthouse in earlier centuries, stands on a small promontory at the water's edge. The town's pastel-coloured houses and narrow streets attracted Matisse and Derain in the early 20th century and retain a strong artistic character today.
Sète, roughly halfway along the coast, is a working port town built between the sea and the Étang de Thau lagoon on a network of canals. It has a genuine local character shaped by its fishing heritage, lively fish markets, and a tradition of water jousting tournaments held from May to September.
The Camargue, at the eastern end of the gulf, is a large natural wetland of salt marshes, lagoons, and open grazing land, home to flamingos, wild horses, and a wide range of bird species. It also marks the entrance to the Canal du Rhône à Sète, where the first opening bridge signals the start of the inland waterway passage that connects, via the Canal du Midi, to the Atlantic.
Notes for mariners
River mouths and lagoon entrances in the Golfe du Lion are subject to sediment movement, particularly after heavy rainfall or storm events, so chart depths may be inaccurate.
