Republic of Cyprus

Overview

The Republic of Cyprus holds the bulk of the island's yachting infrastructure. Marinas, haul-out facilities, and provisioning are well established along the south and east coasts.

Attractions

Southern Cyprus is home to several UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The archaeological park at Paphos contains extensive Roman-era floor mosaics depicting mythological scenes alongside remains spanning several millennia of occupation. The painted Byzantine churches of the Troodos Mountains, dating from the eleventh to the sixteenth centuries, contain some of the finest fresco cycles in the eastern Mediterranean. The Neolithic settlement at Choirokoitia, on the southern slopes inland from the coast, is among the most significant prehistoric sites in the region.

For boats staying in Ayia Napa or Larnaka, the following nearby attractions have been noted by the cruising community. The archaeological site at Makronissos, within walking distance of Ayia Napa, contains 19 rock-cut tombs dating to the Greek and Roman periods, set in an open landscape close to the coast. Larnaka Salt Lake is one of the most significant wetland areas in Cyprus, lying close to the Hala Sultan Tekke mosque complex on its western shore. The lake draws large flocks of flamingos as part of their migratory route, typically arriving in November and remaining until around March.

Notes for mariners

The predominant summer wind is the westerly to southwesterly Meltem, which can strengthen in the afternoon along the south coast. Cyprus is a member of the EU; yachts arriving from outside the EU must clear in at a designated port of entry.
